Damiao Formation

Damiao Fm

Period:
Neogene

Age Interval:
Early or Middle Miocene (Burdigalian or Langhian), N1 , (12a)

Province:
Inner Mongolia

Type Locality and Naming

Central-Eastern Inner Mongolia. The type section is located at the “Damiao section” (E111°34′, N42°00′), about 3 km south of Damiao village, Hongeer town, Siziwang Qi County, central Nei Mongol. It was firstly used by the First District Survey Team (FDST) of the Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources of Nei Mongol Autonomous Region (BGMRNMAR) in 1975, and formally published by Li (1984, in Li et al., 1984).

Synonym: According to Gao et al. (2014a), this formation is a homonym of the Damiao Fm named by Jin et al. (1973), which is a Neoproterozoic (Pt3) rock unit distributed in Xixia area, Henan Province (BGMRH(Henan)P, 1987). BGMRNMAR (1996) treated the Damiao Fm as a synonym of the Tongguer Fm and proposed abandoning the former.

Lithology and Thickness

The Damiao Fm is characterized by a series of yellowish-brown sandy mudstones, coarse sandstones with gravels, and brownish-red and light-yellow mudstones with calcareous nodules. It contains mammalian fossils. Its thickness is about 17 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Sandy claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

In the type section, the Damiao Fm unconformably contacts with the underlying granodiorites. Regionally, next older unit is the Wulantataer Fm.

Upper contact

In the type section, the Damiao Fm disconformably contacts with the overlying Upper Miocene Baogedawula Fm. Regionally, the next younger unit is the Tongguer Fm?

Regional extent

It is restricted in Siziwang Qi area, central Nei Mongol.

Fossils

Mammals: Miotapirus hungerensis, Cervidae indet.. (BGMRNMAR, 1991).

Age

Based on the appearance of Miotapirus hungerensis, the age of the Damiao Fm was considered as be in Middle or Early Miocene (Li, 1984 in Li et al., 1984; BGMRNMAR, 1991). For graphic purposes, shown as Aquitanian through early Burdigalian.
